After absolutely loving Shield of Sparrows, I couldn’t wait to dive into Rites of the Starling—and it did not disappoint. I loved this one almost as much as the first book. Now I desperately need book three… preferably yesterday!
One of my favorite things about this installment is that it finally answers many of the questions that Shield of Sparrows left us with. While Odessa and Ransom aren’t the central focus this time around, I think this book is essential because it gives readers the why behind so many of the events from book one. The additional context, history, and world-building made everything click into place and has me even more excited to see where the series goes next.
The pacing is a bit slower than the first book, but that slower pace allows the story to deepen the world and reveal important information without feeling rushed. Every revelation felt worthwhile, and I appreciated getting a broader understanding of Calandra and its history.
I don’t want to spoil anything because discovering these answers is part of the fun, so I’ll keep this brief. If you loved Shield of Sparrows, you’re going to want to pick up Rites of the Starling. And once you finish it, you’ll be counting down the days until book three right alongside me!
