I feel like I’ve come to expect a slow burn from Ashley Poston’s books, and once you settle into that kind of storytelling, you can really enjoy the characters, the atmosphere, and the way she slowly pulls all the pieces together. And this one definitely has that whimsical, magical feeling that she does so well.
Sophie ends up at Lilymoor House for the summer out of an obligation to a deceased friend, taking on the job of bringing its neglected gardens back to life. What she doesn’t expect is a secret door that never appears in the same place twice, a mysterious garden on the other side, and a man who is somehow trapped inside it. Add in strange vines that seem to have a mind of their own, tension between cousins, a quirky cast of characters, and a little romance, and there is A LOT going on at Lilymoor!
But underneath all of the magic and mystery, this really felt like a story about grief and healing. Sophie may have arrived at Lilymoor because of someone she lost, but it ends up being exactly what she needs to begin working through that loss. I loved watching her become invested not only in restoring the gardens but also in the people who call Lilymoor home and in helping preserve its legacy.
I do wish we had gotten a little more of the how and why behind some of the magical elements—especially when it came to the man trapped in the garden. Ashley Poston still left me questioning a few things after the book ended, but I guess sometimes you just have to say ✨magical realism✨ and go with it. 😂
The secret door, the mysterious vines, the family tension, the romance, and the gorgeous garden setting all give this story such a whimsical feel. But it was the theme of healing that really stood out to me. There’s something lovely about Sophie coming to Lilymoor to help a garden bloom again, only to realize that she needs a little help blooming again, too.
A sweet, magical, slow-burn story about grief, healing, love, and finding your way forward. 🌿🌸
