A romance with a side of adventure? Yes, please! I do love a good genre mashup, and I Did Something Bad by Pyae Moe Thet War definitely delivers a little bit of everything. There’s romance, suspense, mystery, and even a murder to cover up. Talk about an interesting way to bring two people together!
Khin Hlaing is a freelance journalist hoping to land her dream job with Vogue Singapore. Her assignment? Get an exclusive scoop on Tyler Tun, a Hollywood heartthrob who has returned to Myanmar to film a movie. Tyler isn’t exactly eager to open up about his personal life, but when a dangerous encounter leaves the two of them covering up a death, suddenly they have a whole lot more in common than either of them bargained for!
What follows is a mix of secrets, danger, and a slow-burn romance with plenty of tension. I enjoyed watching Khin and Tyler navigate their unusual situation while trying to figure out who was behind the attack and what it all meant. And, of course, there’s that growing attraction between them that complicates everything even more.
For a debut novel, I thought this was an ambitious story! The author took on quite a bit by combining romance with mystery, suspense, and adventure, and I appreciated that she wasn’t afraid to mix things up. I always enjoy when a book doesn’t fit neatly into just one genre.
Was this one that will stick with me long after finishing it? Probably not. But was I entertained while reading it? Absolutely! Sometimes that’s exactly what I’m looking for in a book.
If you enjoy slow-burn romances with a little danger, some mystery, and plenty of tension thrown into the mix, I Did Something Bad might be worth adding to your reading list!
