Fang Fiction by Kate Stayman-London is perfect for fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Twilight, and any cheesy, over-the-top drama involving vampires. I went through a vampire phase myself, so I couldn’t resist seeing if this book lived up to the Instagram hype. Once I realized it was meant to be a non-serious, fluffy read, I leaned into the ridiculousness and ended up enjoying it—though, as a Twilight fan, maybe that’s not surprising!
The story follows Tess, a grad school student who discovers that the characters from her favorite vampire series, Blood Feud, are real. After hosting a party that ends in an assault, Tess is left feeling isolated. She copes by immersing herself in the Blood Feud books, reading them obsessively, writing papers about them, and engaging in fan discussions online. Eventually, she drops out of school, cuts off contact with her best friend, and takes a night job at a hotel.
One thing that bothered me about Tess’s journey was her decision to completely abandon her life and her friendships. If she and her former roommate had just one good heart-to-heart conversation, so much pain could have been avoided. But, of course, if that had happened, she might never have met the vampires from her books!
This is where the story gets really entertaining. Tess ends up trapped on an island with the vampires and must figure out who’s the hero and who’s the villain. Along the way, she learns a lot about herself. While the book is mostly lighthearted and silly, it also touches on serious themes that are handled thoughtfully.
Overall, Fang Fiction is a light, entertaining read. Sure, there are some cringey moments, but the fun pop culture references had me laughing out loud. At its core, the story is about self-discovery and the unpredictable road to healing. If you’re in the mood for a fluffy, not-too-serious vampire romp, this book is for you!
