This one had all the elements for an entertaining book, but just wasn’t what I was looking for. This had some great world building and steamy romance scenes, but I was expecting to like or care about the characters a little more. A romantasy with pirates and mermaids…great start. The development wasn’t quite what I was expecting.
Evelyn ditches her vampire ex-girlfriend and jumps into a portal into Bowan’s realm: Threshold. She’s rescued from the ocean by Captain Bowen and his crew of pirates and is given a choice: join them or die. Captain Bowen and his crew are bound by a vow to patrol the magical sea in between realms, keeping the portals to other worlds safe. As tension rises between Bowen and Evelyn, danger arises too.
Robert set the stage for an exciting tale, one with a unique world and interesting side characters. Evelyn questions authority and ends up putting Bowan in situations where he has to decide what he must do and who he should be loyal to. Her constant annoying bad decisions made me cringe and dislike her. At times, I felt like the pace of the book moved along but then other times it really dragged. I really wanted to like Evelyn and Bowan as a couple and to root for them, but it just got difficult. I found the insta-romance a little unbelievable. I’m a huge NON-fan of insta-romance.
I thought the book had promise, but the pacing felt a little too off for me. The world building started out so strong. And the romance between Bowan and Evelyn was missing something. The side characters were interesting. I’m not sure if I would continue with this series.
