Murder Road is a typical St. James book. It’s a mystery/thriller with a ghost story feel. Some people have to read her books with the lights on and this one is no exception.
In the summer of July 1995, April and Eddie set out on what was supposed to be the romantic getaway, heading towards a quaint resort town nestled away from the bustle of city life. However, their journey takes an unexpected and ominous turn when they veer off course, finding themselves lost on a desolate stretch of road known as Atticus Line.
As they navigate the winding lanes in search of their destination, a lone figure emerges on the roadside, thumb outstretched in silent plea. Moved by compassion, they pull over to offer assistance to the hitchhiker, unaware of the sinister events about to unfold. Moments later, their hearts lurch in terror as they glimpse bloodstains marring the stranger’s jacket, a grim omen of the horrors to come.
Before they can comprehend the gravity of the situation, a thunderous roar fills the air as a menacing truck hurtles towards them, its headlights bearing down like the eyes of a predator stalking its prey. With adrenaline coursing through their veins, April and Eddie are thrust into a heart-pounding chase, their only hope for survival resting on the mercy of fate.
The nightmare continues as the hitchhiker succumbs to her injuries, leaving April and Eddie to grapple with the aftermath of the harrowing ordeal. Their relief at escaping the clutches of death is short-lived, however, as they find themselves thrust into the spotlight of suspicion when the Coldlake Falls police descend upon them, linking them to a series of unsolved murders that have plagued Atticus Line for years.
With their innocence hanging by a thread, April and Eddie embark on a perilous quest to unravel the dark secrets shrouding the town and its cursed thoroughfare. Yet, as they peel back the layers of deceit and betrayal, they soon realize that something far more sinister lurks beneath the surface—a malevolent force that threatens to consume them whole and drag them into the abyss of Coldlake Falls’ darkest nightmares.
I like how St James brings the supernatural element to her books and makes me wonder if I shouldn’t look my doors!?! I’ve read all of her books and will keep reading her. The characters are always interesting and surprise me in some way. And her premise always has me turning the pages. If you have read anything else by this author, you will know what to expect. She has a very distinctive writing style that I really like. I’m not a fan of horror but this is very close without being horror. I’d says her stories are supernatural thrillers.
