“The difference between a hero and a victim? Timing.”

“Up and down lost all meaning. Her world became a violent tumble-dryer, an endless, crashing kaleidoscope.”

This book follows Darby, a college student who, during a blizzard and stranded at an isolated highway rest stop in the mountains, discovers a kidnapped child hidden in a car belonging to one of the people inside. With the roads impassable, she’s forced to wait out the storm at a remote highway rest stop. There is no cell phone reception, no telephone, and no way out. Darby must find a way to break the girl out of the van and escape. But one of her fellow travelers is a kidnapper. Who can she trust?

This book was first recommended to me by our Watertown Regional Library, and I am so happy it was! This was one of the most exciting, jaw dropping, put me on the edge of my seat book I have ever read! Chapter after chapter was jammed full of thrilling entertainment. I wasn’t sure if it would ever end. My anxiety was very high throughout this book because there was no slow chapters that allowed me to catch my breath.

I gave this book a very high five-star rating! It will go down as one of my favorite books to have read. The very first twist left me breathless, and trust me, that’s not the only bolt out of the blue. The uneasy suspense builds page after page until all the characters have gone off the deep end and completely off course.  I think what made this book just so frightening is the fact that it was so believable. Literally every single part of this story could actually happen in real life. Nothing was far fetched and the details really are a sign of our times.
