A comedy writer thinks she’s sworn off love, until a dreamy pop star flips the script on all her assumptions—a hilarious, observant, and deeply tender novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Eligible, Rodham, and Prep.
If you are looking for a smart, satisfying romantic comedy, this is the one to read this year! Sittenfeld always writes with such sharp wit and she did it again with this one. The title encompasses what the book really is!
Sally Milz is a writer for a show called The Night Owls or TNO as they call it. If you like Saturday Night Live, this is what the show basically is. She always wanted to be a comedy writer and she followed her dreams until she made it to NYC. She’s had a few relationships that haven’t been successful so she keeps men at a distance.
On the show, she becomes friends with Danny Horst. He is an ordinary guy who dated a guest-host who was an actress. Sally sees that many of the men on the show are ordinary and end up dating gorgeous women who are way above them. This makes her wonder if it is only a guy thing, but she decides to use her creative ability to make fun of this trend. She came up with a sketch called the Danny Horst rule.
Then we meet the guest-host of the current show who will work with Sally. Noah Brewster is a pop music boy band type with a rep for dating models. When he sits in one of the meetings with Sally and the team, he notices Sally right away. He comments on her sketch, but she may have taken it the wrong way. You can just feel the tension in this book when these two interact. They end up helping each other with sketches and find out they each think the other is pretty nice. But Sally is known to keep guys at arm’s length and she isn’t even certain he could really be into her.
I loved the characters in this one. Her friends were supportive and funny and I just wanted to add them to my phone to call them too! Once I picked this book up, I had to finish it. The chemistry was great with the characters. This one was funny, but also has a few bedroom scenes for spice. This is my favorite type of romance. One that is clever, funny, and has some spice. I had a few other books going but I didn’t read anything until I was done with this one. I would classify this is a smart romantic comedy. This was witty, funny, sharp, and clever.

It’s great to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same out of date rehashed material. Fantastic read.
This was barely a 3 star read for me, I’m giving it 2.5 stars. I thought it was very boring. There was nothing to look forward to for it. I did not get their chemistry. Yes, they were each attracted to each other from the initial meet but then they don’t interact for two years, and suddenly after a few emails and phone calls they are in love. I don’t buy it. It would never last. I found Sally very annoying after a while. Always constantly doubting his love and admiration for her. he had never once given her a reason to doubt his intentions and she constantly doubts him over and over again. He must have had the patience of a saint to put up with her whining.
