The novel follows Hannah. Hannah is married to Owen, whose previous wife had died tragically, leaving him with their only daughter Bailey. After Owen fails to come back home from work one day and Hannah’s calls go unanswered, she starts to form an unexpected relationship with her 16-year-old stepdaughter, Bailey, while searching for the truth about why her husband has mysteriously disappeared.
I would consider this novel more of a domestic drama with just a bit of suspense. It was slightly addictive in the beginning, but became pretty far-fetched pretty quickly and I wasn’t buying into the “predicament” this family got wrapped up in. Their actions didn’t seem reasonable or realistic. Though the novel had decent writing it just ended up being a dull, long-winded plot. I was expecting a lot more suspense and drama.
I gave this book a 3.5-star rating due to the unsatisfying ending for me. My first thoughts on this book as I was finishing it were that this was a very slowly paced novel. There was suspense but it was not that chilling feeling I was expecting. This book was well written and I did think the characters were interesting and well described. The pace is just what put me off, it seemed to take forever to get to the “good part”.
