This was our community read for June and July. This is an epic tale about a journey!

A love story, an adventure, and an epic of the frontier, Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, Lonesome Dove, the third book in the Lonesome Dove tetralogy, is the grandest novel ever written about the last defiant wilderness of America.

I’m not a huge western fan, but this one is worth the read. Don’t let the length intimidate you!! Most of the chapters are pretty short. And the characters are unforgettable. The scenery is something you will think back to once your done with this one! I finished this one a few weeks ago and I still don’t know how to do this one justice.

The characters: there are so many characters, but once you get to know them, they will stick in your mind. There is Gus and Call, the once Texas Rangers, turned Cattleman, are the main men. Then there is Lorena and Claire. A whore and a farmwife. What do they have in common….I guess you have to read it to find out. And July Johnson, the sheriff who just keeps chasing his runaway wife. I think his story hurt the most!

This story starts out in Lonesome Dove, Texas. Then they end up on a cattle drive to Montana, where they think their destiny awaits them. They just have to cross a lot of miles, Indians, and criminal’s paths to get to their dream.

This is a story about friendship, love, loyalty, & perseverance. I was so invested in these characters by the end. This book brought me to tears and I laughed. It’s a quiet type of epic tale. If you like one that will make you think and take you on a journey, this one is for you!
