Eliza Jane Brazier’s “Girls and Their Horses” transports readers into the realm of horse training and equestrian competitions. Within this gripping narrative, the story illuminates the complex dynamics of friendships, fierce rivalries, discord, and cruelty that can permeate this unique world.

“Girls and Their Horses” revolves around the recently affluent Parker family, seeking a fresh start for their newfound opulence by relocating from Texas to an exclusive Rancho Santa Fe community. Heather, the family matriarch, who has a deep-rooted love for horses from her upbringing, is determined to provide her two teenage daughters, Piper and Maple, with the equestrian lifestyle she never had.

Heather promptly enrolls her daughters in lessons at the upscale Rancho Santa Fe Equestrian stable, where they quickly become intertwined with the stable’s social circle. The Parkers find themselves ensnared in the complex web of mean girls and competitive mothers’ cliques, navigating barn romances and uncovering numerous hidden secrets. Under immense pressure to succeed, both daughters and mothers are willing to go to great lengths to ensure their daughters’ success. However, as the summer unfolds, life at the barn takes a treacherous turn, culminating in a tragic death that leaves everyone shaken.

In general, the book offered a gradual build of suspense, infused with ample drama. This novel is likely to captivate readers who relish both mysteries and tales centered around horses. The characters were interesting, the plot had great build up, and the barn setting was very eye-opening to anyone who doesn’t know much about the horse world. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in family drama or murder mysteries with a side of wealthy horse owners.
