“Legends were supposed to be better than the truth.”

After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister, Scarlett, from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name. The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more, and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets…including her sister’s. Caraval has always demanded bravery, cunning, and sacrifice, but now the game is asking for more. If Tella can’t fulfill her bargain and deliver Legend’s name, she’ll lose everything she cares about, maybe even her life. But if she wins, Legend and Caraval will be destroyed forever…

I thoroughly enjoyed this second trip to Caraval. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel because I didn’t think much of Tella in book one and this one is mainly about her and her perspective. However I was pleasantly surprised. She is an exciting character to follow with all the trouble and scrapes she gets herself into. This book had twist and twist I was engaged the entire time. I can’t give away anything for fear of spoilers but I’ll be honest and say that I actually loved this second book even more than the first one. It’s dark and magical and absolutely mesmerizing. The images I painted in my mind as I read the book added so much to my overall enjoyment of the story.

Four stars for the second installment of the Caraval series. I loved the back and forth between Tella and her two love interests. Their chemistry and tension was great and the stakes of the game were extremely high which caused the story to be pretty fast-paced. Anyway, overall I really enjoyed this second book in the series and I can’t wait to dive into the last one!
