This isn’t my typical genre but Fairy Tale by Stephen King was worth the read. I think it could have been 100-200 pages shorter, but still a classic King read.
Charlie Reade is a typical teenage boy who is living with his father, as his mother died when he was younger. He is a baseball and football star and he tries to not let his grief get the best of him. His father is a recovering alcoholic and it was hard on him so he strives to do good. Then he meets Howard Bowditch, a recluse with a big dog in a big house at the top of a big hill. When Mr. Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie the house, a massive amount of gold, a cassette tape telling a story that is impossible to believe, and a responsibility far too massive for a boy to shoulder.
Charlie discovers a portal in the shed and decides to go in it and get more gold and also to see if he can give Mr. Bowditch’s dog a renewed life. He enters a parallel universe and meets strange people and has to fight for his life and to free the land from some bad people. Charlie is forced into being the hero whether he want to or not.
This was an interesting story and I did have to suspend disbelief on this one a bit. It started out normal and then took a turn into fantasy. I did like this one quite a bit. It wasn’t what I was expecting at all. I don’t know what I thought would happen in a book titled “Fairy Tale” but this one was a nice surprise.
