I couldn’t get a hard copy of this right away so I listened to the audio to see if this lived up to the hype. And at first, there was a bit of world and character building so I wasn’t immediately drawn in. But then, the chemistry between characters picked up so I was hooked and the hype was real. Anyone who is slamming this book hasn’t gotten far enough into this book, in my opinion. This is very much a YA geared, but I wouldn’t let my young daughter read it. It has adult fantasy themes. I would like this more in print though because voices (especially whiney ones) can really be grating if they carry on too long. But even though I didn’t especially like the audio, the book had me hooked!

This one is centered around Violet Sorrengail, whose family is like royalty. Her mom is the commanding general and sets Violet’s future on a whole new course than what Violet thought she would be on. She joined the “Scribes” where she thought she would be helping track her people’s history. But according to her mother, her family (all except her father) are “Riders” so her immediate future is at the Basgiath War College. She learns the techniques of fighting and will have to learn to ride a dragon or die trying. Her brother (who is deceased) was a rider and her sister is a rider.

At the war college she also meets bad boy, Xaden. She is instantly attracted to him. She is warned away from him but can she stay away? Will it be possible? HAHA Then there is the whole, dragons mating situation. If your dragons mate, you as humans will have a connection, so that is interesting.

Also, poor Violet has a target on her back for being who she is. Her family (mom) was responsible for the deaths of some of the other cadets parents because they were labeled as traitors. This includes Xaden Riorson’s who is the most powerful and ruthless wingleader. So their sparks fly in many different ways. This is a enemies to lovers to enemies to something else trope.

And all the side characters in this one are so complex and relatable. I felt like Rhiannon, Sawyer, Ridoc, Garrick, Bodhi, and Liam were like friends of mine. And of course what would a book like this be without a power struggle, political motivations, and secrets. And all the cool descriptions of dragons and the way they were ruthless, but cared for their rider at the same time. I was so emotionally connected to this book by the end. And speaking of THE ENDING……OMG!! I’m still reeling over that ending!! Talk about a shocker twist. I never guessed at half the stuff that was going to happen, but at the end I felt like I needed to writed to Rebecca Yarros and demand an ARC to her next book because I was so shocked.

  1. This one gets ALL THE STARS!! Ughhh! I went through so many emotions while reading this book: happiness, sadness, fury, excitement, giddiness, and full-on panicking! This book was a rollercoaster of twists and had me so hooked from the start! Not once did it feel boring or like I should just skim something, and for once, I know the hype was so worth it! I can’t even begin to describe the attachment and love I have for this book and its characters. It has quickly become my favorite books of all time! I need more!
