Rachel Harrison’s Play Nice is the perfect October read—a blend of haunted house chills, messy family drama, and buried childhood trauma that comes together in a moody, atmospheric story you won’t want to put down. Clio Louise Barnes appears to have it all: a stylish life in New York, a thriving influencer career, and a… Continue reading Play Nice by Rachel Harrison
“Never mix vodka and witchcraft.” Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths…and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. This paranormal thriller was my introduction to Rachel Harrison's work, and now I can’t wait to dive into her backlist. So Thirsty felt like a blend of horror, thriller, and feminist girl power—with vampires! It officially marks the beginning of my vampire era. The story centers on two best friends, Sloane and Naomi, who couldn’t… Continue reading So Thirsty by Rachel Harrison
This is book #2 in the Alex Stern Series (Ninth House) and I went into this one expecting a tidy resolution....not sure that was realistic. If you know Leigh Bardugo, she is the queen of unresolved! Find a gateway to the underworld. Steal a soul out of hell. A simple plan, except people who make… Continue reading Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo
“So many memories and secrets, so many burdens. Every life has such weight. I don’t know how anybody carries even one.” Aiden Bishop knows the rules. Evelyn Hardcastle will die every day until he can identify her killer and break the cycle. But every time the day begins again, Aiden wakes up in the body… Continue reading The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton
I re-read this one so that I could read the 2nd book and I remembered why I like Leigh Bardugo so much! This is an academic fantasy you could get lost in. Alex (Galaxy) Stern gets an offer to go to Yale after being the sole survivor of a multiple homicide. Once at Yale, Alex… Continue reading Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches was a charming story about found family that gives you a warm feeling. This is a perfect one to read under a blanket on a chilly night. The characters are smart and funny and the plot moves right along. In a spellbinding tale set against the backdrop of… Continue reading The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
