That’s Not My Name by Megan Lally is a fast-paced, addictive YA thriller that had me hooked from the very first chapter. Told through dual perspectives, this novel masterfully weaves together the chilling mystery of a girl with no memory and a boy desperate to clear his name.
The story opens with a seventeen-year-old girl waking up in a ditch—bloody, bruised, and completely amnesiac. She doesn’t know her name, where she is, or how she got there. When a man arrives at the police station claiming to be her father, complete with photos and documents to prove it, the reader is instantly thrown into a fog of uncertainty and suspense. Is he telling the truth? Is her name really Mary?
At the same time, we follow Drew, a teen accused of murdering his girlfriend, Lola, after she vanished following a fight. As suspicion and panic mount, Drew races against time to find Lola and clear his name. The tension escalates with every chapter, making it nearly impossible to stop listening or reading.
I listened to the audiobook and couldn’t get through it fast enough. The performances added intensity and emotional depth to an already gripping narrative. Lally’s use of the amnesia trope felt fresh and perfectly executed, creating a sense of disorientation and urgency that kept me guessing until the end. The plot twists are sharp, the pacing relentless, and the story would absolutely shine as a film—it has all the makings of a gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller.
If you’re looking for a book that feels both grounded in reality and wildly unpredictable, That’s Not My Name delivers in spades. Highly recommend for fans of twisty mysteries and thrillers that don’t let up.
