This was a heartfelt story about a small town hero and is for anyone who has any interest in baseball.
In this story, Winston Browne is a small town sheriff with a big heart. This takes place in the 50’s in Florida. I thought the small town of Moab, FL with it’s population of 912 was so funny. I loved the idea of a paper that comes out that says who dances with whom and what kind of cake was made by who. Sheriff Browne is kind of like the glue that holds the town together. He is always smoothing things over and making everyone feel good. And he is always excited about the Brooklyn Dodgers, even when they don’t do so well.
When a little girl shows up in town, Jessie, she is immediately taken in by Eleanor. Eleanor didn’t have kids. She had a long term boyfriend who never popped the question. So she decides she doesn’t need Jimmy. Jimmy and Winston are friends, but Winston ends up dancing with Eleanor at one of the many ice cream socials and sparks start to fly. Their friendship takes a bit of a hit, but the Dodgers just might be able to help them stay friends.
Also, the fact that Winston is sick and hasn’t told anyone might change his situation also. He is a magnet for the people that need help. A kid in town named Buzz ends up getting taken under his wing also.
This story was just one emotional up and down after another. Jessie’s story was an anxiety producing one. Eleanor’s was interesting and had it’s ups and downs. And of course Winston’s story, which is central to all of them will have you in tears! These stories leave me so conflicted because I have to be in the mood for these tear jerker ones! But this will hit you in the feels!
