If your mother is the love of your life, what does that make your husband?

One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle is set in the Amalfi coast, need I say more? The scenery was so well described that I wanted to immediately book a trip there. I could almost feel the sun on my face. This one starts out on a sad note, but is a very sweet book about how loss can transform you and make you grow. The audiobook is narrated by Lauren Graham and the epigraph is from Gilmore Girls!

Katy’s mother dies from Cancer. Her mother wasn’t only her mother, but her best friend and confidant. A few days after her funeral she receives airline tickets in the mail for a trip they had planned on going on together. She decides not to take her husband, but to go alone to the Amalfi coast, the place her mother spoke so fondly about and always wanted to travel back to.

When Katy got to Positano, she was shocked to see her mother at the hotel. She faints instantly. This was my favorite scene in the book! When she woke up she is greeted by her mother….. the 30 year old version of her mother. They became friends and she was gifted with a little time with her.

Katy also met a man, Adam, who was trying to buy the hotel, which has been family owned for generations, and she ended up forming a connection to him as well. Katy is trying to find herself and what her next move is, all while grieving the loss of her mother, who is also here with her.

One Italian Summer was such a sweet story and I couldn’t stop listening once I started it. I ended up sitting in my car for an extra half hour at a few places when I was running errands just so I could hear more. The way Serle can vividly describe the scenery and transport you there and how she puts so much heart into her characters to make me so invested is amazing.
