Catherine Steadman has done it again! Nine Lives is one of those psychological thrillers that slowly gets under your skin. At first, you’re happily following along, and then suddenly it’s way past your bedtime because you have to know how everything is going to come together.
There are quite a few characters introduced throughout the story, but I never felt overwhelmed. It quickly becomes clear which ones are most important, making it easy enough to keep track of everyone.
One of my favorite parts of the book was the premise of the cat camera. It’s such a bizarre and clever idea! I couldn’t stop thinking, “Why are these people letting a random cat wander into their homes?” (Maybe that’s just my cat allergy talking!) It was such a unique way to uncover secrets and kept me hooked from beginning to end.
I also loved how the story alternates between the past and the present. Watching the events unfold from their origins while seeing the present-day consequences added so much tension and kept the suspense building. Every chapter revealed another piece of the puzzle, making it nearly impossible to put down.
And that ending! I had to laugh at the way everything wrapped up, especially with the return of a character who hadn’t seemed particularly important but ended up being the perfect catalyst for the final reveal. It was such a smart and satisfying way to tie everything together.
If you’re looking for a psychological thriller with a unique premise, plenty of suspense, and twists that keep you turning the pages, Nine Lives is a clever and thoroughly entertaining read.
