The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches was a charming story about found family that gives you a warm feeling. This is a perfect one to read under a blanket on a chilly night. The characters are smart and funny and the plot moves right along.

In a spellbinding tale set against the backdrop of contemporary Britain, “Nowhere House” by Sangu Mandanna takes readers on a captivating journey into the clandestine world of magic and belonging.

Mika Moon, a solitary witch concealing her powers in a society oblivious to magic’s existence, maintains a facade of conformity. However, her secret life unfolds online, where she shares whimsical videos posing as a witch, confident that her charade remains inconsequential. She wants to be like every other girl, normal.

Mika is an orphan under the care of Primrose Beatrice Everly, the head of a highly clandestine foundation. However, to clarify, Mika was primarily brought up by a series of nannies and tutors whose memories were promptly wiped clean upon discovering her extraordinary powers. Within Primrose’s guardianship, stringent regulations governed Mika’s upbringing, and discussions concerning her deceased family of witches were infrequent and evasive at best.

Unexpectedly, Mika receives a plea beckoning her to the enigmatic Nowhere House. It’s a secluded sanctuary where she’s tasked with mentoring three young, novice witches. Ian Kubo-Hawthorn, an eccentric retired actor in his 80’s and a member of Nowhere house’s eclectic group, see’s Mika’s YouTube video on “how to be a witch” and can spot something in her that she didn’t mean for anyone to see. Breaking her self-imposed rules, she ventures forth, unwittingly entangling herself in the intricate web of the house’s inhabitants. Amidst the cryptic archaeologist, a retired thespian, devoted caretakers, and the enigmatic Jamie – the protective librarian – Mika discovers an unexpected sense of connection and community.

The owner of Nowhere House is the archeologist Lilian Nowhere. She is deeply engrossed in her clandestine endeavors, leaving her preoccupied and unable to tend to the girls she adopted. Despite sharing the same magical abilities as the young girls, Lillian lacks the time to nurture or guide them in mastering their powers. Indeed, Lillian herself is a witch, akin to the girls under her care!

As Mika navigates the secrets and dynamics within Nowhere House, a sense of belonging tantalizingly beckons. However, with peril lurking outside their haven, she faces a daunting choice: safeguard the newfound family she’s come to cherish or retreat to the shadows she once called home.

With deft storytelling and an enchanting narrative, Sangu Mandanna weaves a tale brimming with intrigue, magic, and the yearning for a place to call home. “The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches” is a mesmerizing adventure that delves into the depths of found family, the allure of belonging, and the sacrifices one must make to protect those they hold dear.

This book had a bit of everything. From eccentric characters to charming characters, grumpy guy who doesn’t like but then likes the girl trope, fantasy, adventure, magic, secrets, and three little witches who will make you laugh. This is a book for any occasion.
