“Hearts don’t have bones. They can’t actually break.”

“Maybe we did grow heart bones. But what if the only way of knowing you grew a heart bone is by feeling the agony caused by the break?”

This novel follows Beyah. Beyah’s mission in life is to get away from Kentucky and her drug addicted mother. That reality comes sooner than she expected when she ends up in Texas with her father, whom she hasn’t seen or communicated with in two years. She plans to lay low until the summer is up; however, she meets Samson. Whereas, she comes from a life of poverty and neglect, he was born in a family of wealth and privilege. She is drawn to him and the overall mystery of him. And soon they begin a summer fling.

Heart Bones was heavy on the angst and mystery. It features a strong story element but unfortunately, the romance doesn’t deliver the emotional punch as promised. I found Beyah’s character to be so judgmental that I struggled to like her. I found her annoying. She starts out very indapendant since she basically raised herself, by herself, but then she acts like a recluse child most of the time and not like the woman who had to fend for herself because her drug addict mother didn’t bother with her and her father never tried. The plotline was too convenient. All side characters seem so hollow. There is no originality. The story seemed promising but the more I think about the ending, the more it frustrates me.

I gave this book a two-star rating for the reason that I actually finished it. It was a struggle to get through, but was manageable. I have very much enjoyed Colleen Hoover’s novels in the past that this one felt lazy and uneventful. The writing felt rushed and empty. I can’t believe I’m saying this about a Colleen Hoover book but I just did not like it.
