Set in England in the late 18th century, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet’s five unmarried daughters after two gentlemen have moved into their neighborhood, the rich and eligible Mr. Bingley, and his status-conscious friend, the even more rich and eligible Mr. Darcy. While Bingley takes an immediate liking to the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, Darcy is disdainful of local society and repeatedly clashes with the Bennets’ lively second daughter, Elizabeth.

Pride and Prejudice retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of “most loved books”. It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature, selling over 20 million copies, and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Likewise, it has paved the way for archetypes that abound in many contemporary literature of our time. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen’s memorable characters or themes.

I chose to read this novel because I was gifted it. Firstly, I do not read historical fiction for the simplicity that it does not catch my attention enough. Mostly due to my knowledge or lack there of from that time. I do not know much on history so when things happen in these novels, I tend to either not understand or think its weird since I am not aware how certain things were during that time period. Going into this novel, I was under the assumption that this was going to be more of a romantic novel. It really isn’t. To me, if felt like there was not much going on in the book. Not a lot was happening and what was happening was not that interesting. I really wish I would have enjoyed it more, but perhaps just the language of it was what threw me off too. The spelling of certain words and how they talked, I struggled to actually understand what was going on.

Sadly, this book was three stars from me. I know some out there love this one, but it wasn’t really for me. I am happy I know the story now but I guess it was to much work for one story which prevents me from rating it any higher!
